1 Day Master Class
Information Management in Energy
24th September 2009
Room G408, Department of Information Management The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen
The IM masterclass that took place on the 24th September was designed for the upstream oil & gas sector of the energy market.
Presentations were driven by respected analysts from the Butler Group, which has just completed a merger with Ovum and Datamonitor, so will be known in future simply as Ovum. The four different sessions were intended as launch points for breakout sessions in which small groups of IM professionals from the oil & gas sector could study their own perspectives, issues and lessons learned.
The feedback from the forum members was very positive and full of ideas for the future, with everyone who completed the survey indicating that they would like to attend similar sessions in future and would recommend them. We found that there was considerable discussion amongst the whole group and in the smaller groups at each table - so one lesson learned is to allow more time for discussion and debate.
The overall content, presentations, speakers and day received a great response from the audience. We have taken onboard that at the next event more interaction would be useful, with less presentation time. Sharing information, validating direction and mingling with peers on the day were found to be very strong points of the day, along with discussing common issues. We are now incorporating suggestions for the next masterclass in March, such as more formality to the breakout sessions. Most people highlighted this as a useful addition to the standard presentations.
There is a lot to be done with IM in the Energy sector, so we need to give people the chance to go into detail on the topics of main interest. The objective was to foster an environment in which solutions can be developed and shared amongst the local IM community, drawing upon expertise from the corporate and academic sectors. RGU staff comprised the Head of Department for IM, senior lecturer and research co-ordinator. Attendance for our first group meeting was very good, with people travelling from Hull, London and Edinburgh as well as those local to Aberdeen.
